Springtime in Vancouver is truly magical, with the city adorned in delicate cherry blossoms that create picturesque scenes perfect for photography. As a Vancouver-based photographer specializing in family, children, and couples photography, I've had the pleasure of capturing these beautiful moments amidst the blossoms. Here are some of my favourite parks that offer stunning cherry blossom photography opportunities:

My Top 3 Favourite Cherry Blossom Parks

While Vancouver boasts numerous beautiful spots for cherry blossom photography, my top three favourites that I go to every year with my clients are Garry Point Park, Ron McLean Park, and Queen Elizabeth Park. Each of these locations offers something unique—whether it’s the waterfront beauty of Garry Point Park, the peaceful charm of Ron McLean Park, or the stunning city views from Queen Elizabeth Park. No matter which you choose, you’re sure to capture breathtaking images.

1. Garry Point Park

Located in Richmond, Garry Point Park is renowned for its expansive fields and breathtaking cherry blossom trees. The park's open spaces allow for versatile photography sessions, making it an ideal spot for family portraits among the blossoms. The contrast of cherry blossoms against the waterfront views creates an enchanting atmosphere for capturing timeless images. In fact, I offer Cherry Blossom Mini Sessions at Garry Point Park, providing a perfect opportunity to capture these fleeting moments.

2. Queen Elizabeth Park

As the highest point in Vancouver, Queen Elizabeth Park offers not only beautiful cherry blossoms but also panoramic views of the city skyline. The park’s pathways are lined with cherry trees, creating dreamy photo opportunities. The combination of colourful gardens, blooming trees, and scenic landscapes makes it a must-visit spot for families and photographers.

3. Ron Mc Lean Park

A hidden gem in Burnaby, Ron McLean Park is a peaceful location with stunning cherry blossom trees. The park offers a mix of open spaces and tree-lined pathways, making it an excellent setting for family and portrait photography. Its quiet and relaxed atmosphere provides a perfect backdrop for capturing natural, candid moments.

4. Stanley Park

One of Vancouver’s most iconic locations, Stanley Park is home to breathtaking cherry blossom trees, particularly around the Japanese Canadian War Memorial. The contrast of pink blossoms against the park’s lush greenery and historical monuments creates stunning compositions for photographers.

5. Burnaby Mountain Park

Burnaby Mountain Park is my favourite for spring and fall. This park has convenience in parking and has great spots for portraits too. The park offers stunning views of the city and mountains, and the cherry blossoms create a beautiful contrast against the landscape

6. David Lam Park

Nestled in Yaletown along the waterfront, David Lam Park is a fantastic location for cherry blossom photography. The park features several cherry trees that bloom beautifully against the urban backdrop, making it a great spot for both nature and city photography. This is where the cherry Blossom Festival happens every year and it s a beautiful lively event to see.

7. VanDusen Botanical Garden

For those looking for a curated garden setting, VanDusen Botanical Garden is a wonderful place to photograph cherry blossoms. The garden features various cherry tree varieties, offering different shades of pink and white blooms that make every shot unique. Note - you will need to buy an entry ticket to get in.

8. UBC Nitobe Memorial Garden

For a serene and traditional setting, the UBC Nitobe Memorial Garden is a hidden gem. This Japanese garden showcases cherry blossoms in an authentic setting, surrounded by traditional bridges, lanterns, and water features. It’s perfect for capturing peaceful and reflective photography.

Tips for Capturing the Best Cherry Blossom Photos

  • Golden Hour is Key - Shoot during early morning or late afternoon for the softest light.

  • Use a Wide Aperture - A lower f-stop (e.g., f/2.8) will create a dreamy bokeh effect.

  • Low Angle Shots - Kneel or go down to shoot your subject as most of the blossoms are higher than the person.

  • Shoot Through Flowers - Portraits are beautiful when you ask your subject to stand in between the flowers dropping from above and you can play around with the composition where the focus is on their face and trest are blurry.

  • Incorporate Movement - Capture falling petals or people walking through the blossoms for a dynamic shot.

  • Shoot from the Top - Do you know its beautiful when there is a carpet of petals on the floor? Get your subject to lay down and there are endless possiblities for poses

Vancouver’s cherry blossoms provide an incredible backdrop for photography, whether you’re capturing portraits, landscapes, or artistic shots. Plan your visit during peak bloom and make the most of these stunning locations!
